By cycling for a cure, you are helping the Burnet Institute fight The Big Three: HIV, TB and malaria – the world’s worst infectious diseases. The Burnet Institute is a unique, Australian organisation focused on curing and preventing the spread of some of the world’s most serious infectious diseases and cancers.
The Institute’s work combines world class laboratory research and practical, frontline public health programs with some of the most disadvantaged and marginalised communities around the world. This combined approach allows the Institute to make a real and long-term impact, preventing the spread of diseases, whilst searching for vaccines and cures.
We’re not talking about ‘the big three’ grand prix car races or ‘the big three’ tennis tournaments, we’re talking about the big three global killers – HIV, TB and malaria. Around the world, infectious diseases kill millions and millions of people every year, and these three are by far the worst offenders.
- An estimated 33
million people are living with HIV (that’s 10 times Melbourne’s
population!)
- 1/3 of the world's
population is currently infected with TB
- Malaria causes over 1 million deaths every year
It’s like we’re at war really – Burnet scientists and health workers arm themselves with the latest scientific equipment and knowledge to combat these bad boys. But they just keep coming back for more, camouflaging themselves to avoid detection, destroying cells and causing illness along the way.
But as you know, war’s expensive and so is our fight against these killees; any contribution you can make to Burnet will make a difference to our efforts. And remember, all donations over $2 are tax deductible.
