Adelaide dad amongst the leading fundraisers

Monday, October 26, 2009

Adelaide father, Dave Schultz jumped out of the pedals early to lead the interstate fundraising charge before recently being pipped by NSW mum, Sue Schmich.

A very keen cyclist, raising money for the Burnet Institute’s fight against The ‘Big Three’: HIV, TB and malaria was also a motivating force for Dave to sign up for the inaugural event.

“It’s such a great cause,” he said. “I’ve always been aware of the health problems in Africa and since sponsoring a child in Ethiopia where AIDS is very prevalent it’s brought it all closer to home.”

Dave’s family and friends are backing his quest to complete the 140km Rainforest Circuit through the spectacular Otway Ranges National Park alongside his parents-in-law, Wayne and Judy Carruthers, committing $540 so far in donations.

The 40-year-old former country footballer, who took up cycling following a back injury, is preparing on weekend rides with friends in the nearby Adelaide Hills.

“A group of us go riding regularly and we try to do as many hills as we can,” he said.

“For me cycling and being healthy is a lifestyle choice rather than a competitive outlet, even though at times riding with my mates becomes quite competitive.”

Dave is already very familiar with the stunning Otway National Park rainforest terrain.

“My wife Tegan and I have spent a lot of time around the Apollo Bay area and I always take my bike with me, so I know how scenic the Rainforest Ride will be,” he said.
